Welcome back to Good Noise Only!
In this episode, Avery, Jonathan, Sadie, and Riley review Lucy Dacus’ new album Forever Is A Feeling – a project driven by her powerful storytelling, intimate lyricism, and emotional honesty. They explore how the album captures Lucy’s journey of confronting and overcoming the feelings of love she’s been suppressing, and how that vulnerability shapes the record’s tone, production, and narrative arc.
This album was chosen by me, Sadie! This album was an easy pick for me, as the second it came out it quickly became my most listened to album ever. The thoughts and feelings this album evokes are beautiful, depressing, genuine, and perspective changing. I couldn’t be happier to be given the opportunity to share with my friends in Good Noise Only, and you, our viewers, listeners, and readers!
Calliope Prelude is the opener of this album, and we all thought it did an amazing job at setting the tone overall. As well, Riley gave us a lovely little history lesson about the background and origin of the name Calliope! It was the name of a Greek goddess, more specifically, the Greek muse of eloquence and epic poetry. From a personal perspective, hearing this for the first time really solidified my love for the album and for Lucy’s power as a storyteller, and am extremely grateful to have this knowledge now, so thank you to Riley! A bonus fact from her is that the instrument Calliope is said to make really really loud sounds, which really explains the jump in frequencies throughout the prelude.
Right in the middle of this album, we get hit with For Keeps, a truly devastating song for most! While analyzing and talking about this song, we all had various opinions, but all agreed that this song was quite an emotional slap in the face for those in situationships, early breakups, and any sort of emotional turmoil. Crediting Riley again, she cleverly wrote ‘F U Sadie’ in her notes for this song, which I found quite funny.
As well, the absolute quality of this song really made it seem like we were in the room with her while she was singing.
Ending off this masterpiece (spot the bias) of an album is Lost Time. Throughout this entire album, we see and learn about Lucy’s feelings with love, alongside her struggles. The way this song ends and allows it to all truly come full circle is genuinely beautiful. Avery described this song perfectly, saying it felt like a “post rainy day like a rainbow’s going to happen, The storm has ended.” All of us were in resounding agreement over it being a wonderful end to this album!
Continuing on our new tradition, everyone gave their individual ratings!
Avery gave the album a solid 7.5 out of 10.
Jonathan a subjective 6.5 out of 10, but gave it an objective 8.5 out of 10!
Sadie gave an easy and obviously biased 10 out of 10.
Riley gave it an 8 out of 10, noting her love and appreciation for the lyricism!
All and all, Good Noise Only’s average rating for Forever Is A Feeling comes out to 8.5 out of 10!
