In episode 1, hosts Avery, Jonathan, Sadie, and Riley kick off the series by reviewing “Load My Revolver, Baby” by Her Words Kill. Watch as they break down the track’s production, themes, vocal performance, and emotional impact while exploring how each track contributes to the evolving post hardcore sound.
This album was chosen by Jonathan, it’s a post hardcore album and Jonathan describes it as “beautifully haunting” while covering complex topics such as breakup, loss, and love. On top of these, it also earns a spot in Jonathan’s top 5 albums of all time which is quite an honor!
This album starts off with Girls, Guns & Dynamite, it starts off strong, really setting an amazing tone for the album as a whole. Even with a small quantity of lyrics, the song truly gets a lot of feeling across with each and every word. The instrumental in itself also brings out a lot of emotion and really immerses you in the narrative of this album as a whole.
Make Me Beautiful is in the dead center of this album, and offers a truly different experience. Outside of the other songs, Make Me Beautiful takes a more melancholy route in beginning. Despite it’s differences, this song quickly became the top track for most of us, notably Riley and myself! This song in particular sets a really cool tone in terms of the narrative. Similar to Girls, Guns & Dynamite, it has a smaller than normal amount of lyrics, yet it covers a large array of emotions, feelings, and possibilities. This song leaves many doors open, as do the others, and really allows the listener to dive deep and heavily encourages them to find their own meaning, and path. Touching back on Jonathan’s initial description, it’s easy to say that Make Me Beautiful is indeed beautifully haunting.
Love On The Catwalk is the 7th and final song on this album. It does an extremely good job at tying off every lose end and wraps the narrative up well. It’s constant back and forth between higher and lower energy really exemplifies the ups and downs we all felt while listening to this album. As well, Jonathan told us all that this song was his personal favourite out of the album.
In the end, all four of us gave the album a rating out of 10!
